I exhaled for the nth time while staring at my phone. I’m looking at the digits that I’ve ignored for almost two months? Or was it two and half? I know I was being a coward not replying to any of his messages or even answering his calls. It’s just that I don’t know what to tell him exactly.

I was actually supposed to call him the day French and Louise left but I decided to put it off for another week telling myself, I’d just adjust to my new work schedule. And adjust to my sort of “renewed” life.

And then I put it off for another week again. First week being Editor in Chief is crazy but great. I was able to put up with the new demands, but good thing I was able to catch up quickly. I’ve met up with some friends. My relationship with Moe felt as normal as it could ever be. It seems like what we were in high school and college - carefree, open and comfortable. When he’s not busy for the day, he’s my personal driver. If we are both free, we meet up. It’s not like we went back to being housemates. It’s actually better that we don’t because now, we make time for each other. It’s quite easy to forget that he confessed his feelings because we are what we were before. And besides, the topic was never brought up again.

And now. I’m confused.

“Moe confessed. But he says, he doesn’t want me to be pressured. Same as French and Louise. Does that mean, he’s going to be okay if I continue to go out with Alden?” I asked myself out loud.

Tsk. Common sense Japs. Where’s your head?

But I like Alden. I really do. Hm. Don’t I?

I don’t know. Do you?

Well. He’s nice.

Elmo’s charming.

Alden’s handsome. Those dimples are to die for.

Moe has appeal that captures everyone. The smirk? Gods. Every girl would love that cocky smirk.

Tsch. Alden is sweet through and through.

Moe is sweet without even trying.

Alden is persistent.

Give Moe a chance. Give the guy a break, he just confessed.

 Alden’s… uhm. Perfect?

You know Moe ever since.

“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKK. This is crazy.” I slouched further on my bed as my brain battle it out. I’m on my own now, wondering if it’s (finally) the right time to call Alden. “Why didn’t I think of this when French and Lou were still here.” I groaned.

The poor guy must’ve thought there’s really no future for us. I like him. But I don’t know if I like him enough. I sighed.

“Think Japs, think!”

Oh well. I better get this done and over with. I like him. Period. I don’t know if there’s a future but I’m willing to try it out. Here goes –

I poise my thumb to finally press the call button. When –

“What the hell should I tell him?!” I wondered out loud.

“Hello Alden. Hi it’s me Julie –“ Fudge. Who am I kidding? He knows my number, why should I introduce myself? How about -

“Hi Alden! How are you? –“ Are you out of your mind? You left the guy hanging for more than a month and ask him if he’s okay?! What if he says, he’s not? –

“Hello Alden! Do you want to take me out again? –“ What are you fast food take out?! Uh –

“Alden, hello! I like you. Sorry for not getting in touch with you these past weeks. Is it okay if we start over?” Eeep. Do I sound desperate?! Tsk. Whatever. I’m running out of ideas.. But this sounds better than the rest. Go. Go. Go –

I finally press the call button before I stop myself again. I’m sort of praying that he doesn’t answer the call. But as usual, the gods decided to conspire against me.

“Hello? Julie?” Ohmygod. He answered in that deep innocent voice that makes me feel guilty all over again.

“-Um.”

“Julie?” Yeah right. Julie Anne San Jose! Answer you fool!

“Oh. Hello Alden! Hi! How are – um – I just wanted to – “

“Julie! Um. Hi! No need to explain. It’s okay, I understand.” He finished tentatively. He understood? No need to explain? What in the world did I do in my previous lie to deserve a guy like this?

“Thank you. I actually had a hard time thinking of the right things to say to you, and how to say I’m sorry I –

“No need to be sorry. It’s really okay. I’m good. As long as you’re happy, fine by me.” He says he’s okay but why does he sound so sad?

“Oh. So I guess we’re –“

“It’s not your fault. I should’ve read between the lines before. No wonder there was this unspoken tension. But you know, you could’ve told me earlier.”

“Yeah, I’m sorry. I really should’ve spoken to you way before. It’s just that I really don’t know what to say.” I replied guiltily.

“So it’s really true then. I just read it this morning –“

“Um. Wait. What?”

“You and Elmo.”

“Huh?”

“You two are really together all these years. No need to deny it Julie. Like I said, it’s fine.”

“Where’d you get that?!” Is this a joke?!

“Write-ups has been made all over the internet.”

“WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!”

“No need to deny. You two look good together.”

“But- “

“Wait. It’s still a secret? Julie, pictures of the both of you just got viral. Well, actually, now, are you at home? Speaking of which, I guess you’d better turn on to channel 11, tweetbiz.”

I didn’t need to be told twice, I grabbed the remote from my bed side table and turned on to the show Alden just mentioned. I could only gape at what was flashed on the TV screen. Pictures of me and Elmo since then were thrown in collage style, with random snaps from recently. But the most horrifying of all was the text printed in bold atop the pictures which read:

SPOTTED: Elmo Magalona with his rumored fiancée. Could it be that they’re finally making their relationship public?

“OH MY GOD. I think I have to call you back.” I didn’t wait for Alden’s response nor have I heard if he said anything else. I clicked my phone shut and watched in horror as to what the hosts would say.

What the frack is happening?

“ I don’t want this day to oveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer.” I groaned as I stretched myself out in my bed that I’ll be sharing this night with French and Louise.

“Psh. Stop acting like a baby. It’s not like we’re not gonna see each other anymore.” French snuggled closer to my left side.

“Yeah, and besides, everything’s fine now.” Louise said in a teasing tone that I know so well.

“Huh? Oh. You mean with Moe? We’re now cool again, I guess.” I shrugged.

“COOL? You call that cool?! Why’d I sense something way more than coolness earlier, then? Spill girl!” French propped herself up with an elbow and looked at me and Louise.

“OHMYGOD, RIGHT! Did he tell you already?! Details, girl, details!!!” Louise bounced up from lying down to sitting Indian style on the bed.

“Well now that you’ve mentioned it,’ I turned to narrow my eyes at Louise, ‘I’ve heard that you knew about this ever since.”

“Me? Uh. Heh. Sort of.” She looked away guiltily while laughing awkwardly.

“WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ME?!”

“Tell you what? About Elmo’s feelings?!”

“Yes! You knew all along and you didn’t even warn me about it!” I huffed.

“Me? Not telling you? Excuse me. FYI. What have I been doing all these years? Wasn’t I teasing you? Insisting that Moe like you very much?” Louise smirked.

“But you never said those seriously! And I didn’t even know that you’ve talked to him about it.”

“Geez Julie. The confession must come from the guy himself. And besides, I was also a bit confused with his actions. I only know that he loves you very much. But the dating game he’s playing? That one I don’t know.” She stated nonchalantly.

“But you should’ve at least –“

“Wait! Stop! I can’t catch up with the both of you! What’s up with Elmo and his feelings? What happened? I’m here you know. Please do include me in this conversation.” French whined.

“Julie. Do the talking. Now.” Louise nudged my arm with her knee. I rolled my eyes at her.

“Well… he apologized and explained stuff. We’re kinda good now… But he told me about this not so filial, um, not so platonic feelings he has for me. And I’m actually, uh, sort of confused by this whole matter because he said that he’s really not expecting something in return.” I said slowly.

“So Magalona finally had the guts to spill the beans.” Louise giggled.

“And here we are thinking that World War III would come faster than that.” French laughed.

“You also know about this French?!” I threw her an accusing glance. Does everyone know this besides me? WHY WASN’T I EVEN INFORMED?!

“Well duh. If not only for the fact that there were still a little bit of buzz about Lauren and Elmo, everyone thinks you guys should be together, if you still aren’t!” French exclaimed.

“Don’t tell me you really didn’t feel anything? Ever since high school?!” Louise had this look on her face as if I’m an alien or something.

“I liked Sam!” I said defensively.

“Yeah, right.”

“Julie, everything was actually plain to see. The overprotectiveness stuff you told us about? Well, no brother was that hardcore you know? Maybe Elmo tried his best to fight his feelings off but it was really quite obvious. When you two are together? Your presence unnerves him. You quite had this effect on him that you’re not aware of. I don’t even know if Elmo is aware of it himself.” French gushed.

“You were just stubborn to place him in the brother label that everything he did registered to you as brotherly love. It seemed like he was also contentedly stuck in that position for you, but well, see what happened. The guy went bonkers.” Louise laughed.

“Stop it guys. It feels weird. All I wanted was that we be okay again because I missed my best friend. Now I got something I never expected. What do I do?” I replied.

“Nothing.” They both said at the same time.

“NOTHING?! Why do all of you answer the same thing? It’s not everyday that your brother, or sort of brother, confesses to you that he has romantic feelings for you. How can I act like nothing happened?!” I exclaimed.

“Gods. You’re such a drama queen. You’re complicating things again.” Louise made a face.

“What?! I don’t get you.”

“What we’re trying to say is, why rush? Enjoy the feeling knowing that you’re dear to him. And besides, the question you should be answering is, do you feel the same?” French said in her big sister mode.

“Um. I don’t know.” I shrugged.

“Exactly the point. You said so yourself, Elmo didn’t expect anything in return. And knowing that guy, he’d seriously hold anything off for you. He’s freaking contented knowing that you know that you’re special to him.” Louise pointed out.

“Juls, don’t think too much about it. He’s still the same. Nothing changed. If you don’t feel anything romantic towards him, don’t force yourself to. Just be you. That’s fine.” French finished.

“But. Knowing that he’s feeling those stuff, I’m feeling a bit guilty that I don’t feel the same.” I said softly.

“Tsk. Don’t feel guilty, Saint Jose. If Elmo hears you right now, he’s probably gonna laugh at what you’re worrying about. He’s not forcing you to like him. It’s just that he likes you. Period. Don’t stress too much.” Lou explained as if I’m a toddler.

“ But it’s differe-

“No buts Julie. Let it be. And I don’t think you’re closing your door yet. Maybe in the future you never know. It’s just that right now, you don’t have feelings for him YET. But well, who knows?” French cut me off.

“Yeah right.” Louise giggled, and then continued, “But we’re not saying that in the future you’d feel things, it’s just that it’s still possible. Maybe not now, but in the future yes. Or maybe, none at all. Tsk. Why must you be paranoid about every thing?  You know, you’re only stressing yourself too much. Just cross the bridge when you get there.” Louise hugged me as she lay down again beside me.

“Dwell on the positive things Julie. You guys are okay now. And you’re relationship is as good as new. Start from there.” French pinched my nose.

“Psh. Okay fine. Anyways, could you two stay here forever?” I said sweetly.

“As much as we want to, sorry. Our talent fees go up by the minute.” Louise said airily. While French giggled.

“Yeah right. I’ll miss you too I know that’s what you really wanted to say.” I snapped back teasingly.

“Good night.” Louise whispered.

“Love you both.” French chirped in.

“Love you more.” I smiled as I closed my eyes.
